Begin with Baby Steps

More than 8 years ago, a group of individuals looked at the faces and places of poverty around us, and saw an opportunity to reach out and help. Together this small group of well-meaning people set out to work at alleviating poverty-related suffering in three main areas: hunger, homelessness, and inadequate healthcare.

But, poverty is a mighty problem. Where would they start?

In April 2004, the first steps were taken as hundreds participated in the first annual Race of Grace. At this early stage, the Weekend of Grace wasn’t a weekend at all. It was a single event that followed a simple course. Yet, those 5 kilometers proved to be the starting point for a journey that would grow and inspire thousands of people to take action, knowing that even the smallest of steps can have a meaningful impact in alleviating the pains of poverty.  In 2006, the Links of Grace gave golfers a way to support the cause, and in 2007, cyclists came on board as the Tour de Grace was launched.

Continue to Grow and Influence

Today, the Weekend of Grace has grown into a full-fledged Weekend of Grace. Kicked off by great golf event at Neuse Golf Course, on Friday, the weekend cycles into Louisburg for the Tour de Grace Bike Race before heading to Edenton Street on Sunday afternoon. There, children, youth, adults, and tiny tots in strollers will saunter through the shady streets of downtown Raleigh, as serious runners dash by their way the finish line.  Seven years after that small group of people took a giant leap faith, nearly $200, 000 had been raised through the annual event that, on a rotating basis, focuses support to aid the plights of hunger, homelessness, and inadequate healthcare – right in our own neighborhoods!
